Cap Rock Window Directions
GPS
Waypoint for Cap Rock Window 36.580000,-84.677600
Word
of warning before attempting this trek.
It
is off trail and though it is not far it is through thick vegetation
and briars.
It
would be very snaky in warm weather. Do this one when it is cold.
I would use the GPS
to help. The trail is very sketchy, and there are lots of faint paths out on this one point of land.
Driving
Directions
From
the intersection of Hwy 154 North and Divide Road
Travel
East/Northeast on Divide Road for 4.70 Miles
at 4.50 miles you will need to bear RIGHT to continue on Divide Road where it splits with
Blevins
Cemetery Rd. Go 0.2 miles further and turn RIGHT again onto Terry
Cemetery Road
Continue
on Terry Cemetery Road to its end in 5.80 miles.
You
will park at the end past Terry Cemetery.
You
will see a gate to prevent further vehicle traffic and trail signs
for Longfield Branch Trail and Maude's Crack.
Hiking Directions
Hike
back the main trail from where you parked going straight out the old
gravel road signed for Maude's Crack for approx. 0.25 miles. Watch
for a faint path heading into the woods on the LEFT. Turn left onto
this faint path and follow it northward. It is flagged in places and
heads in a generally northern direction for another 0.40 miles. Cap
Rock Window is to your LEFT here. Watch for flags leading you to
the rim of the gulf toward Cap Rock in about 150-200 feet. You can
get a glimpse of the very tip top of Cap Rock here. From here there
appears to be no way down to it and from this exact spot there isn't.
Back
track 50 feet toward the rim of the gulf back the way you came and
you can very carefully work your way down under the rock bluff that
you were standing on. There are trees and bushes to hold onto and it
is not a straight drop off, but a steep bank.
This
is the simplest way to work your way round to it and a view of Cap
Rock from the base.
We
made the hike way more difficult than it need be in order to reach
the base of it.
The
area was heavily flagged because there is a high concentration of
various arches on this one point of land. I would not trust the
flagging unless you are using the flags in conjunction with the GPS coordinates helping you.
