Driving
Directions to Boatland Road
From Hwy 127 in Jamestown TN turn to get on Hwy 52
West
Stay on Hwy 52 west for 8 miles then turn LEFT onto
Boatland Rd
Stay on Boatland Rd for 1.70 miles to a sign for
Skinner Mountain WMA.
Turn RIGHT here onto Skinner Mountain Road.
Turn RIGHT here onto Skinner Mountain Road.
It looks like a driveway and
there are a few residences up this lane.
There is a sign along the left near one of the
driveways for Russ and Robin Brown.
It is the R N R Resort and indicates there is a park
and ride. It belongs to Russ.
You can stop in and visit with the Brown's and get
further info or you can go a little further up the road to a signed
pull off gravel parking lot on the LEFT.
This is the park and ride. Russ will probably not
want to take your money and doesn't charge anyone, but try to
convince him to anyway. The road needs upkeep and it can go toward
that if nothing else. Do not litter and please be respectful of
private property. There are no bathroom facilities here. Bring along
drinking water because there is none on the mountain. If you are
riding four wheelers remember this is a WMA and a permit is required
for the driver!
Hiking does not require a permit. Passengers on or in four wheelers do not require a permit.
The likelihood of seeing a game warden back here is
slim.
Park here and walk if you do not have four wheel
drive or a side by side.
Beyond here the road deteriorates into deep ruts and
wash outs.
If you came to ride four wheelers or like a challenge
you can drive it the whole way.
From the intersection of Boatland Road and Skinner Mountain Rd.
From the intersection of Boatland Road and Skinner Mountain Rd.
Drive
1.25 miles up the rutted four wheel drive road to an intersection.
Take
the fork to the LEFT and follow Lost Creek Road out for a little
over
1
mile to a dead end. You will have to park and walk about 600 ft
to
the RIGHT heading south to the Skinner Mountain Overlook.
There
is a plaque dedicating it to Governor Phil Bredesen by the Nature
Conservancy.
Aside from the plaque it is otherwise unimproved so
it
along with all other overlooks on Skinner Mountain have no railing
or
anything to stop you if you should fall. Stay back from the edge
and
enjoy
the view down into the valley below. You should be able to glimpse
the
East Fork Obey River below you along with the rural scenery of
West
Fentress.
