How to Find Waterfalls Blog Series

Once again I heard from a reader last evening who was interested in learning more about how to find waterfalls.   I realized the best way to place this tutorial material where it can be found is to keep it all in one spot.
I am putting links to all four parts on this page. They will be on the front of my blog under a separate tab.  I will leave this up for future use.

The tutorial series progresses from the most basic waterfall hunting to ever increasing levels of difficulty and challenge.  Not everybody's cup of tea.  Life is different for different people.

Below find an example of one of each of the four types of falls you might hunt up.

1.  Beginner--Mingo Falls-- on a trail and in the guidebook

2. Intermediate-- Upper Mingo Falls-- not in most park literature, in other guidebooks. Trail to it most of the way, but not advertised.

3. Difficult--- level 3  Alarka Falls-- trail to it from the top and bottom.  In some guidebooks.  On some databases now.  lesser visited.  Multiple approaches possible.  Not signed or marked in any way. Unofficial trails or off trail.

4.  Have you Lost Your Mind.. What Waterfall?  The Cumberland Plateau
Big Sink 047.JPG

Above: Big Sink... one of many sink holes in Tennessee called "Big Sink". A falls that shoots out of the  bank and flows into the ground.  No stream indicated where this one is.  There are other even more extreme examples of this in the plateau. So much so that they become commonplace to folks who have lived in the area or done much hiking there.    I've found six or seven sinkhole waterfalls of varying sizes. Some flow year round. Others are wet weather.
