Size comparison.. they are teeny tiny. One has a double bloom.
Healthy specimen.. They were all fading fast.
Here you can really see they are past peak, but I was thrilled to get to see them.
I have seen the small yellow lady slippers before, but this was a new spot. It was an adventure finding them. Fun sharing this sort of experience with friends.
Who doesn't like wading around in weeds, briers and poison ivy to find flowers?
**Purposely no location or info included. This was a special invite by trusted friends to see something special. I won't mess the relationship up by giving out secrets. I will share a few helpful hints. **
End of April thru mid May at low elevations are good times to look for pink and yellow lady slipper orchids. Keep your eyes peeled when hiking during those times of year.
If a trail is good for one sort of orchid at a time of year you should hike it very observantly during other times of year. Trails good for one sort of orchid often have other species blooming during various times.
Pink lady slippers like pine-oak forests and acidic soil.-- Where you hike a pine woods you are likely to find them. Examples Lead Cove Trail near the road is a piney woods. Little Greenbrier Trail has examples of this forest type along it in places.
Yellow lady slippers like rich, cove hardwood forests. Places where the soil is sweet.
Limestone rocks to improve and enrich the soil. Moister most of the time.
Places where you might see great white trilliums, wild geraniums, and the other typical Spring ephemerals are more suited to this flowers needs.
